Dr. Sampson Abu brings a wide range of clinical and research experience to his role at Thomas Eye Center. Originally from Ghana, he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Cape Coast in 2015 and spent the early part of his career practicing in both academic and private clinic settings.
In 2017, he relocated to the United States to pursue a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His work focused on the early detection of glaucoma progression, contributing to several peer-reviewed publications in the field. He later completed his Doctor of Optometry degree at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, where his clinical training included neuro-ophthalmic disease, contact lenses, and Veterans Affairs clinics. He went on to complete a residency in ocular disease at Omni Eye Services in Atlanta.
Dr. Abu provides comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages, with a focus on ocular disease management, surgical co-management, and myopia control. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of both the American and Georgia Optometric Associations.
He lives in Athens with his wife, Daniella, and their two children. Outside the clinic, he enjoys family time and mentors high school and college students who are interested in healthcare careers.
Dr. Abu is currently accepting new patients and looks forward to building long-term relationships within the Athens community.
